Highland Associates was selected by Deposit Central School District to provide architectural, engineering, and interior design services for their Capital Improvement Project. The scope of work was determined by a combination of the Building Conditions Survey, performed by the Highland Team, and the input gathered from a dedicated Project Committee comprised of board members, administrators, staff, community members and parents. The Capital Improvement Project addressed three major categories in need of upgrades: maintenance, energy saving and curriculum. Working with the District, the Highland Team developed a plan to address each of these categories.
There were several improvements made to protect and enhance the exterior of the Elementary School, Jr./Sr. High School, and Bus Garage, including concrete and brick repair and sidewalk concrete repairs as well as campus wide site work. To address energy efficiency, an LED lighting upgrade was designed and mechanical upgrades, including HVAC, were designed. The District focused on 21st century curriculum upgrades and student needs by updating technology, teaching spaces and ancillary spaces. Science Labs, STEM/Technology Room, Library/Media Center, Health Suite, Main Office, and Bathrooms were all renovated. The Library/Media Center renovations included the addition of a student-run café. Through the day to day operation of this café, students are gaining valuable and tangible skills such as project management and communication skills, budgeting and business planning, accounting, and reporting, marketing and public relations, leadership, and teamwork.
With careful planning, the District was able to maximize state aid and use Capital reserve funds to complete this Capital Improvement Project without a tax increase. Each of the improvements, upgrades and renovations designed have sought to serve the students, faculty, and community as they work to fulfill the District’s mission of improving the quality of life through education.
